Three VW Models Earn Car and Driver Editors’ Choice

Three VW Models Earn Car and Driver Editors’ Choice

Volkswagen is starting 2026 with a strong vote of confidence from one of the industry’s most respected voices. Car and Driver has named the 2026 Volkswagen Golf GTI, Golf R, and Tiguan to its prestigious Editors’ Choice list—an honor reserved for the very best vehicles on sale.

Out of more than 450 vehicles evaluated across 47 segments, only 131 made the cut. Each Editors’ Choice winner must earn at least a 9 out of 10 rating from Car and Driver’s expert reviewers, based on rigorous instrumented testing, driving enjoyment, mission fulfillment, and overall value. Having three models recognized underscores Volkswagen’s broad appeal—from performance hatchbacks to family-friendly SUVs.

Volkswagen Golf GTI: The Benchmark Hot Hatch

Few cars carry as much enthusiast credibility as the Golf GTI, and for 2026 it continues to live up to its legendary reputation. “With ample cargo space, a spacious cabin, and performance aplenty, the Volkswagen Golf GTI upholds its reputation as the archetypal hot hatch,” Car and Driver noted.

Now in its eighth generation, the GTI blends everyday usability with playful performance. A recent facelift brings refreshed styling, improved technology, push-button steering wheel controls, and an expanded suite of driver assistance features. Power comes from the familiar EA888 2.0-liter turbocharged TSI® engine, producing 241 horsepower and 273 lb-ft of torque, paired with a 7-speed DSG® dual-clutch transmission and a VAQ electronically controlled limited-slip differential.

The 2026 Golf GTI is offered in S, SE, and Autobahn trims, with pricing starting at $34,590 MSRP.

Volkswagen Golf R: Stealthy, Serious Performance

For drivers who want even more performance in an understated package, the 2026 Golf R delivers. “Stealthy looks, tons of power, [and] an advanced all-wheel-drive system to put it to the ground,” according to Car and Driver.

The facelifted Golf R raises the bar with an upgraded EA888 engine now making 328 horsepower, up from 315. Power is sent to all four wheels through a 7-speed DSG® transmission and Volkswagen’s 4Motion® all-wheel-drive system. Visual updates—including a new headlight design, illuminated grille and logo, and a more aggressive front bumper—reinforce its role as Volkswagen’s performance halo.

Pricing for the 2026 Golf R starts at $49,455 MSRP, with an available Euro Style Package that adds an Akrapovic™ titanium exhaust, lighter sport seats, and a sunroof delete, cutting nearly 80 pounds from the car’s weight.

Volkswagen Tiguan: A Redesigned Compact SUV Standout

Volkswagen’s best-selling nameplate also earned Editors’ Choice honors, thanks to a comprehensive redesign for 2026. “More fun to drive than most of its rivals, [and] plenty of space for passengers and cargo,” Car and Driver said of the new Tiguan.

The third-generation Tiguan features bold new styling, a more upscale interior, expanded driver assistance technology, and no fewer than 10 airbags. Two versions of the EA888 evo5 2.0-liter turbocharged engine are offered: 201 horsepower in S, SE, and SE R-Line Black trims, and 268 horsepower in the SEL R-Line Turbo. Power is delivered through an eight-speed automatic transmission to either front-wheel drive or available 4Motion® all-wheel drive.

Inside, every Tiguan comes well equipped with a 12.9-inch infotainment display, 10.25-inch Digital Cockpit Pro, and the innovative Driving Experience Dial. Higher trims offer premium touches like a 15-inch screen, real wood trim, quilted leather seating, and 3-zone Climatronic® Touch climate control. Pricing starts at $30,805 MSRP for FWD models and $32,305 for 4Motion AWD.

A Well-Rounded Win for Volkswagen

From the enthusiast-favorite GTI and high-performance Golf R to the fully redesigned Tiguan, Volkswagen’s 2026 lineup proves that driving enjoyment, everyday usability, and strong value don’t have to be mutually exclusive. Earning three spots on Car and Driver’s Editors’ Choice list is a clear signal that Volkswagen continues to get the formula right—across multiple segments and for a wide range of drivers.
